Your kitchen looks like a typhoon blew through it, and all you did was cook dinner. If you leave things in the state that they’re in, the room will attract bugs and other pests. After you finish your meal, it’s time to grab your supplies and learn how to deep clean a kitchen.
It’s not too hard once you get started scrubbing. As long as you don’t get distracted, you can get the entire job done within a few hours or so.
All you have to do is figure out where to begin first. We can help you with that. Keep reading for step-by-step instructions on how to clean a kitchen.
Do a Quick Sweep Over
When you see the state your kitchen is in, it’s easy to feel more than a little overwhelmed. Take a few deep breaths and do a quick sweep over of the room.
Grab anything that shouldn’t be in your kitchen and place it in a small basket to put away later. If you do it now, you may get distracted. If you left any spices or condiments out on the counter, place them in your cupboards.
Take the dishes out of your sink and get them started in the dishwasher. Grab a rag and wipe down any food spills from your countertops and other surfaces.
Organize Your Pantry and Cupboards
Remove all your food items from your pantry. Flip over the boxes and take a look at the expiration dates. Anything too old should get thrown in the trash.
If there’s stuff in the pantry that you know you’re not going to be able to eat before it reaches its expiration date, donate it. Make a soapy water solution and wipe down the shelves once you have them cleared off. After the shelves dry, feel free to put everything back in the pantry in some kind of organized fashion.
Now that’s handled, it’s time to take care of those unruly cupboards. First, take everything out of them. Stuff that you only use seasonally should be stored somewhere that isn’t your cupboard.
This will save tons of room for other things. Wipe down the shelves with soapy water and put everything back once they dry.
Tackle the Refrigerator
Cleaning out the refrigerator is most likely the grossest part of deep cleaning a kitchen. If you tackle it early, though, the rest of the job won’t seem that bad. Take all your food items off the shelves.
Anything that’s growing fungus or is past its expiration date goes right in the trash. Clean off the shelves with warm soapy water. Take the fruit and veggie drawers out and scrub them down as well.
Put all the food back, and then give your freezer the same treatment.
Wipe Down the Light Fixtures
Create a solution that is equal parts vinegar and water. Spray your light fixtures with it, and wipe the grime and dust away with a microfiber cloth.
If you have any lightbulbs that are burned out, take this moment to swap them out.
Take Care of the Cabinets
Unless your cabinets are built all the way to the ceiling, the tops of them are probably covered in dust. If you have any items displayed up there, take them down and grab a hand vacuum.
That will get rid of any large particles of dust. You will need to follow it up with a duster to get any small leftover bits, though. Wipe down your display items before you put them back.
As far as the front and sides of your cabinets go, they accumulate a lot of grease. Castile soap will take care of that problem. You can also break out that water and vinegar solution again.
Clean Your Windows
Remove your drapes and dust your blinds. Roll the blinds up and tackle the window with any glass cleaner that you have on hand. If you want to give the cleaner some extra oomph, you can add vinegar to it.
Scrub the Appliances
Kitchen cleaning tips dictate that you should clean your microwave out at least once a week. If it’s been a while since you’ve performed this chore, go ahead and do it now.
Scrub your dishwasher and clean any old food out of the bottom. If your oven has a self-cleaning feature, turn that on and clean the exterior of the appliance.
Clean the Floors
You can’t take any cleaning solution to your floors until you sweep or vacuum them. Not only will you spread the grime around, but you may also scratch up the material.
Once you mop the floors clean, grab any rugs you have in the kitchen and step outside to shake them out. Bring them back inside and throw them in the washing machine. From there, it’s all a matter of following the cleaning instructions and putting them back where they came from.
